Cannabis Advocates in Iowa Target Presidential Candidates
September 24th, 2015
The cannabis advocacy group Iowans 4 Medical Cannabis recently announced the release of a questionnaire that they plan to deliver to all presidential candidates over the coming weeks that’s designed to leverage the state’s unique position, according to Sioux City Journal.
The move follows similar initiatives by the group to reach out to campaigns and candidates during their visits to the state. While the group has had limited success so far, they are confident that they can leverage the state’s prominent place in the presidential selection process to expand the message to the next president of the United States.
With the new questionnaires in hand, the group will deliver the form to each candidate’s campaign office and attempt to address the candidates in person.
The questionnaire contains just four questions focused on whether or not the federal government should reclassify medical cannabis as a less dangerous drug. So far, 23 U.S. states and Washington DC have comprehensive medical marijuana laws on the books, but many of these laws are at odds with the federal government’s position on the drug – listing it as a Schedule I Controlled Substance alongside “hard” drugs like heroin.
In Iowa, patients can obtain a prescription for medical cannabis for the treatment of certain medical conditions like epilepsy, but the drug cannot be produced or dispersed in the state, making it impossible for residents to actually obtain and use the drug lawfully.
The Iowan cannabis advocacy group and others around the country are hoping that the presidential election will lead to some tangible changes in the federal government’s stance on medical and potentially recreational marijuana given the increased state adoption.
