Maryland Prepares to Issue Licenses to MMJ Industry
September 29th, 2015
Maryland’s medical marijuana laws are finally on the cusp of implementation two and a half years after being passed. According to the Washington Post, the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission is ready to issue business licenses to medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation centers, prompting a range of reactions from public officials.
The state’s regulations will permit 94 dispensaries and 15 growing facilities designed to generate pills and oils and provide them to the public. This month, the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission will start accepting applications, while potential applicants are meeting with government officials across the state. Applicants are especially concentrated in western and central areas where land is cheaper and more available.
Currently, only teaching hospitals like Johns Hopkins University are permitted to distribute medical marijuana, but no hospitals have been willing to participate. These dynamics have left thousands of medical marijuana patients without access to much-needed medicine.
Cannabis advocates believe that these new dispensaries and growing facilities would create both jobs and economic opportunities in the state. According to one growing and processing facility, would-be owners have indicated that the company could create 124 jobs and contribute millions to the local economy.
In the end, the state’s medical marijuana progress is something that should be commended and patients could soon see medicine available by next year.
